A small but enthusiastic group of orienteers turned out for Day 1 of the Qld Cyclones run QBIII event. Today's courses required a good level of fitness, careful navigation and some dexterity at crossing an operational electric fence - and that was just to get to the start! Once underway, competitors enjoyed the retro 1978-style black and white map - with 10 m contours, any gullies that showed were certainly deep.
The younger brigade came to the fore with Matt Doyle taking out Red 1, Trent Blinco winning Red 2 (as well as an impressive effort from relative newcomer Elliott Meelun) and Lachlan McIntyre victorious in Orange. It was left to Joan Sheldon to wave the flag for the experienced orienteers - a win on home turf in Red 3.
Thanks to the cyclones for putting together a well organised and fun event. Onwards to Cotswold tomorrow.
